Element SixKey Concept: Aesthetics
Related Concepts: Composition and Presentation Global Context: Science and Technical Innovation Statement of Inquiry: Using different techniques and processes students will explore how we create beauty through arrangement and presentation of elements of art.Inquiry Questions: What words do we use to talk about art? What emotions can I create using these ideas? Do my intentions and the viewer's response need to be the same? Learning ExperiencesLesson One - Line
Content Objective: I can experiment with line for expressive effect. Language Objective: I can treat words and letters as a work of art. Culture Objective: I can design my name in a way that represents a part of me. Thinking Skill: How do I express with line? 1. Draw a line which illustrates the following emotions: Excited, happy, bored, tired, nervous, attentive. 2. Brainstorm ten different emotions, choose five and illustrate those. 3. Write your name on the top of the page. Write you name ten different ways. If ten is easy, go for more!** **This idea comes from Betty Edwards! Lesson Two - Space Content Objective: I can use shape to create foreground, middle ground, and background, and to create positive and negative space. Language Objective: I can use my understanding of terminology to make art. Culture Objective: I can use traditional ways of making art. Thinking Skill: How do I use space to represent real things? 1. Look at the three different kinds of shapes. 2. Choose any combination of shapes and create foreground, middle ground, and background. 3. Choose any organic shape, cut it from paper and use a cropping tool to experiment with proportion. Lesson Three - Texture Content Objective: I can use line and/or shape to communicate texture. I can find texture in cut items. Language Objective: I can use texture as a way to communicate emotion. Culture Objective: I can see how many texture affects are universal. Thinking Skill: How can I use texture to create an emotional effect? 1. Look at images and create descriptors for the types of texture. 2. Brainstorm some other texture words. 3. Create three different textures, one with line, one with shapes, and one actual texture. Write an emotional word underneath. Lesson Four – Bringing it All Together Content Objective: I can choose which elements of art I will use to create a feeling. Language Objective: I can write about becoming an artist. Culture Objective: I can use universally understood ideas. Thinking Skill: Which techniques best suit my idea? Assignment: Use what we have learned about line, space, and texture to make a letter work of art. That is choose. A letter or non-Latin character (like Korean) and make it into a work of art.
How do I want people to feel when they look at my letter? How did I use the elements of art to achieve this (line, shape, space, texture?) Write, record audio, or video with your response. Should be between 50 - 100 words. |
